Sites with equid remains in the ancient Near East

This map shows the location of sites where faunal remains of equidae have been identified. On this map, they mostly come from the Bronze Age (c. 3000-1100 BCE), with a few examples from earlier and later periods.

Sites with equid burials around the world

Equid burials – most often of horses – are found around the world and throughout history from at least the Early Bronze Age. They occur both alone and associated with human burials. This is a fascinating phenomenon where it appears that certain ‘horizons’ of human-equid engagement happen around the same time over vast geographical areas.

This map shows some of these burials, roughly divided chronologically.

The map is in no way comprehensive, but I am continuously adding sites. If you know of any that are not already on the map, I would love to hear about it! Just send me an email with a bit of info and references.
